Using Digital Storytelling to Describe the Development of Individuals in Context

Working together in small groups, students will do the following:

Identify a population that you would like to know more about.

Review the scholarly literature to understand how mental health challenges or wellness issues have been described for your population or what theories have been used to frame their development. Write a brief literature review paper for your group, which describes the articles you found and then integrates that information to create a picture of what is known and what is still to be learned about the developmental strengths and challenges of individuals in this population. The paper should be three to four pages and in APA Style.

Find a way to start a direct line of communication with that population (e.g., through an organization, a support office, a contact in the community, a social media site). Be sure to provide an informed consent form so individuals know that anything they share with you will be used in your final presentation in our class but not shared beyond class. (Note: this assignment was originally implemented to study college student populations, so ethical considerations should be discussed if translating it to populations with the potential for greater stressors or mental health diagnoses.)

Invite approximately 8–10 individuals in this population to share three photographs or images with you, addressing the following: – What is it like to be a part of this group and live in this community?

– What are some stressors or barriers you experience as a member of this group as you try to achieve your personal, social, academic, or career goals?

– What would achieving success or wellness look like for you? What helps you be resilient in the face of challenges?
